Category Archives: Announcements

This maybe a little different for this blog but I felt it important to share this here.

If you have a Facebook account then no doubt, you’ve seen a Friend’s Page littered with Posts they’ve shared to win something. Maybe its jewelry, clothes, a truck or a Modular/Mobile home. The post will sport tempting photos of the item. The caption will be easy to read and simple.

In order to enter to win, “Like” our Page, “Share” on your Timeline and then, “COMMENT” something like, “Done” or whatever.

These Pages will rake in thousands of “LIKES”, all because deep down, we all want to WIN something. Sometimes, we desperately NEED it.

Such is the case with a family member of mine who has worked her entire life two and sometimes three jobs. Her house is falling down around her, though. Filled with Mold. When she should be retiring and spending time kicked back with Grandkids, she is putting in more hours, going to work at 3 am and then off to clean houses once her fulltime job—plus overtime, is done. Why? She is trying to earn enough money (because she doesn’t want to take out a Loan) to hire someone to rip out her ceilings and roof, fix it and then redo the walls and floors of her house where the roof and mold has literally ruined everything. Now, my family member has never been one to believe in Fairytales. Obviously, a woman like that who has worked two to three jobs knows nothing in life comes free, but at night, when she is trying to wind down, cruising FB for pics of her Grandkids, and she stumbles upon one of these Mobile Home Contests, well, she can’t help but LIKE, SHARE and COMMENT—because wouldn’t that just make her life a little bit easier? And in knowing that, I have even played along, daydreaming, “What if I won this thing for her? Wouldn’t that just blow her mind?”

But does anyone win?

No one ever brags about the winners. Wouldn’t these so-called Companies do a Follow Up with pictures of Prizes being delivered or homes being put in? Interviews or Video Clips of the Winners getting their Prize? While even that can be staged, where are the trails and bragging rights done by the Companies who supposedly donate these items? If I was Casey’s Mobile Homes and I just gave some other Company a Mobile Home to launch off as a Prize, wouldn’t I want the recognition or advertising in order to send more business my way? So people can say, “Hey, Casey is a cool cat for giving away that prize!”

Nothing. You can track nothing.

This morning at 6 am, I signed onto Facebook to check my Newsfeed when low and behold, there was ANOTHER contest being shared by a Friend. Another Mobile home, or well, Modular.

Viral News

I commented. I asked, where are the previous Winners? Why no Follow up? Is this a SCAM? Maybe I should contact CNN, 60 Minutes or some other Media site to see if they will investigate these kinds of posts on Facebook.

My Comment was deleted. Not by me. By them. I should have known they were paying attention when every comment posted before mine, immediately after said:

I have requested Viral News’s address and phone number. And I did send out messages to Dr. Phil, 60 Minutes and other News Outlets asking if they would investigate a growing trend on Facebook. Will they? Who knows, but I am posting about it here and hopefully, others will to.

Looking under the Page’s REVIEWS, I find things like this:

(I protected the picture and names of people but have original in my Files.)

If you have a blog or online platform, please, share my post or create one of your own. Let’s start shutting these crooked places down.

Oh, and it seems I am prevented from Commenting further on their post or page. Priceless.

Have you missed us? We have sure missed you. And I can’t tell you how glad I am to have The Pagan and the Pen back on the map!

I am more pleased to announce that we have some awesome things on the horizon. It’s almost like the vision we had years ago is in full bloom! Scratch that. It IS like that. We are in full bloom!

While I am still signing Authors up and working out the details of Columns, I’d like to give you a short sneak peak of what we have so far.

Of course we will be posting the Ancient Calendar, daily, but we will also include Modern Day Pagan Holidays as well.  We have added Magical Moon Phases and All Things Paranormal.

I have new articles coming up interviewing people and their experiences with the Astral/ Shadow Spider/People Phenomenon.

We have new interviews being set up as we speak with Pagan Artists, Musicians and Authors. Once a month or so, our very own Nimue Brown will be giving you the latest on Pagan Authors and Books. She will also be taking us on a journey to meet all these Artists we have coming and fabulous Musicians. I can’t even begin to list the things Nimue has in store for us.

But also, real quick, I’d like to thank her husband, Artist Tom Brown, for constantly feeding our blog with his very talented Art. Without him, our Graphics would be so very lacking.

New Columns on the horizon. We have Modern Minoan Paganism and Circe’s Circle, just to name a few. Please click on those to find out their descriptions. You will NOT be disappointed.

We have with us, D. Ryan, who will head up Circe’s Circle, who happens  to have first hand knowledge in the field of Education and LGBT issues.

Laura Perry will not only educate us concerning Modern Minoan Paganism, but she is an Artist who has published her own set of Tarot as well.

We have a new Facebook Page, GIVE US A LIKE HERE, please, and we have a NEW TWITTER ACCOUNT. We also have a Forum in the works, which will be coming later, but soon.

We have Debi Gregory,  who will also be bringing us a Column. Debi heads up Pagans with Disabilities .which is affiliated with the Pagan Federation. They have an online Midsummer Festival event coming up so PLEASE check that out!

We have Folklore (Mountain Lore) and Remedies coming, Historical information, Metaphysics, Herbs and Gardening, Bath & Body, Kitchen Witchery, Recipes, and  SO MUCH MORE!!!!

There is so much on the horizon, I couldn’t possibly list it all here. So please, find us on Facebook, Twitter, follow or join the blog… whatever you need to do to stay posted and as always….ENJOY!

Art to support art, by women for women.

One of the toughest things I’ve ever done in my life was to let go of a long-standing friendship. She had repeatedly gone back to her abuser, insisted she’d never meet a better man, and in the end wound up walking down the aisle with him. I had sheltered her in my apartment for a week after he chased her around their place, threatening to kill himself with a jug of booze and a bottle of pills because she had tried to break up with him. He was, in a word, dangerous. And I could do nothing. I had never felt so helpless, so frustrated, and so terribly afraid for someone as I watched her personality morph over time and become as toxic as he was.

I couldn’t save my friend. She was like the sister I never had, and walking away hurt like hell. But I knew if I continued to stay and enable her choices, eventually my own health would suffer. Given how her abuser had treated me in the past, I had reason to believe that being involved with either one of them would endanger me. I sometimes wonder if she’ll ever walk away, realize her self-worth, and get back on her feet.

I’m not a professional when it comes to dealing with abuse; I only know what I’ve been through and what I’ve watched others go through. I’m the survivor of an abusive relationship myself, all verbal/emotional. Too often people think abuse is strictly physical, but no one can show bruises when they are being verbally threatened, bullied, and taunted by their significant other. Too many women out there, some with children and some not, suffer at the ends of their tormentors. Women’s shelters exist to help these women get back on their feet, stay alive, and learn how to survive away from the significant other who had threatened them.

When I was invited to contribute to the Dreams and Desires vol 4 anthology, I was thrilled. I was even more ecstatic when I heard its proceeds go towards a worthy cause: donations towards A Windows Between Worlds, which provides art supplies and art training as therapy for battered women’s shelters. It was the chance to do something positive. It may not save my friend, but others like her wind up at these shelters every day–four million per year, in fact.

I hope that you will consider purchasing either my short story in the volume, or the entire work in support. It will be out in print in a few weeks for those of you who prefer that format, but for now both releases are out today in ebook:

Love & Magic,

Dear Daily Mail

An open letter on behalf of The Pagan Conspiracy.

Just to make it absolutely clear that there is a pagan conspiracy. We have systematically infiltrated every profession, and each branch of government. We are subtle, and clever and we get everywhere. This is of course a deliberate attempt to take over the country and undermine all its traditional values – you know those values about fear, racism, ignorance and intolerance, shafting the poor to uphold the rich, and wrecking the planet for short term material gain. In our attack on these oh so important values we are, of course, threatening to destroy western civilization and bring about the end of the world as we know it.

When we have taken over the world, you will all be forced to accept our liberal and tolerant policies. There will be no escape from this. We will inflict upon every man, woman and child the horror of having to listen to their own consciences. We will demand that people act responsibly and treat each other with respect.

Once we have secured enough positions of power we will be promoting education and waging war on bigotry, stupidity and the kind of people who make money by feeding off the fear of others.

You are right to be afraid of Paganism. If everyone goes Pagan, who will read the Daily Mail?

(Join The Pagan Conspiracy today. Copy the above, and then email it to your friends, post it on your own blog, spread it about as a facebook note, #paganconspiracy on twitter, print it out and pin it to the toilet door…)

Druid Charity Status

The Druid Network has charity status – not registered yet, but rubber stamped as fulfilling the requirements for registration, so pretty much there. This is very big news. It makes tdn the first recognised Druid charity in the UK and the first pagan group to be registered under the 2006 Act. It’s taken years and a lot of very wonderful people have fought very hard to make this possible – dealing with a system that had been set up to handle religions shaped more like Christianity than not.

The Druid Network having achieved charitable status will bring all kinds of benefits to the organisation, enhancing credibility and creating opportunities to promote and support Druidry. This is all good. It also means that any other pagan charity is going to have a much better chance of getting charitable status. No other Druid group is going to have to prove that Druidry is a valid religion. Other pagan groups will be able to use the tdn case to help express their own. The process that has got tdn charitable status has helped create understanding of nature based religion, modern polytheism, and things that are not remotely like Christianity. As this is a legal definition of tdn as a religious charity, it will have all kinds of wider legal implications too.

It’s an awe inspiring thing to have seen happen. I’ve been in a position to watch from the sidelines through the later part of the process. The work that has gone into making this happen, has been colossal. It’s wonderful to see paganism being taken seriously, and I think this bodes well for our future.

I know there are a significant number of pagans who are wary about contact with officialdom. For some, part of the attraction of paganism is precisely that we aren’t tied up in state structures and officialdom. However, for pagans to have the same rights as other folks and the freedom to live and worship on our own terms, we have to engage with the system. It’s vitally important that we do that without compromising the individual choice and responsibility inherent in paganism. To define ourselves without becoming dogmatic, and engage with authority without becoming authoritarian or hierarchical is going to be a challenge. The systems we deal with are based on assumptions that are totally unlike paganism.

One of the things that charitable status for the Druid Network shows is that we can engage and be heard, without having to become something other than we are. That gives me hope.

Honouring our Founder

The Pagan and The Pen was founded by pagan author C.H. Scarlett. She started with the idea of having a space where pagan writers and writing could be celebrated, exploring what pagans do, rather than work that is necessarily pagan in and of itself. She hunted the rest of us out on egroups and social networking sites, and word slowly got round, drawing together a number of pagan authors and creative souls. The blog has evolved from there, gaining a sister site that does reviews, a number of columns, and some wide ranging content.

For personal reasons, C.H. Scarlett is stepping back, leaving me at the helm, and with others stepping up to make the behind the scenes and technical things run smoothly. We’re going to miss Casey, a lot. She’s created the shape of this blog and forged a community behind it. Her energy and vision have kept us all working hard and giving our best. The time, creativity and skill she’s poured into this blog will take some replacing.

So I wanted to use today’s post to honour the tremendous work C.H. Scarlett has done here, and to thank her for what she’s created. I also want to wish her well in finding a way through her own trials. I feel certain that wherever she directs that tremendous energy of hers, amazing things will happen. I hope that, in time, she’ll be able to return here in some capacity.

I’m intending to keep her work and covers on the blog – after all she’s given us, it seems like the least we can do.

Unless someone else steps up to post daily on ancient pagan festivals, we won’t be continuing with that column. If you feel it’s something you could do, please get in touch – or a less frequent column on festivals if the daily one seems too onerous a task.

Go well Casey, we love you and will miss you, hope you find what you need, and that life treats you kindly. You’ve stepped away with consummate care and honour, for which you have my gratitude – plenty of people cut and run when times are hard, but you’ve taken much care of us, and this blog, and enabled the rest of us to continue. Blessings on your hearth, Lady.
