Ancient Calendar: May 26, 2010

Story.gif picture by Beloved_Isis

In many circles of Paganism, today is and was Sacred Well Day. What does that mean? Well, it meant that most people would decorate and gussy their Wells up with flowers, and whatever else. If we do this, then the spirits who have passed over, could very well rise up and speak to us. In many corners, Wells were doorways into other worlds. People would use them for Divination and all sorts of fab–things. What cool Well lore do you know?

In Ancient Egypt, this day would have been known as “Receiving of Ra“.

A little announcement. Yes, Ancient Calendar is the same as Pagan Holidays. I just thought this title might be a bit more accurate. We also have our own page, located Ancient Calendar.

The Channel, the Black Dog, & the Crossroads

Hekate-1 Years ago when I was 19, I used to go to this woman who claimed she was a channel.

A channel, being someone that the dead can speak through.

She was the mother of my dearest friend, and this being their family secret, you can imagine my excitement when they first decided to ‘tell’ me about it.

As I said, I was 19 and I had been pursuing subjects concerning the Occult and Paranormal for many years prior. Only I walked that path alone since where I grew up, such interests were forbidden.

I felt alone, sometimes lost, but never on the verge of giving up. So naturally, when I discovered that this family was on the same level as me…well, it was amazing to say the least.

On the first night with that Channel, things that I never told a soul…my own personal experiences, my private dreams, visions, everything –came to light by mouth of the first spirit that entered. I was ecstatic and while not all things were what they seemed to be with the woman channeling, there were many experiences that I just couldn’t shake or forget.

One being the black dog and the crossroads.

It was 2 am in the morning and we were sitting in the Channel’s living room watching movies. Whatever came ‘through’ her, was often known to lie or muck about. In fact, by this time, we had realized that she probably preferred the more troubled or negative beings than anything else. They became her crutch to do all sorts of harm to people, among other things. If it wasn’t for my friendship with the daughter, who was nothing like the mother, I probably would have stopped going there despite the few times a normal and impressive entity did come through.

So when this so- called spirit came forth crying (claiming she was my daughter from a past life).

I just sat, smiled politely, nodded, and watched the TV in the corner of my eye– hoping it would soon be over.

That is until the crying became hysterical and this ‘daughter’ of mine had a warning for me.  She claimed when I drove home that night, I would see a large black dog lying in the road. I would get out of the car to help the dog but it would jump up and rip my throat out. She said the dog was sent by evil to destroy me.

I admit, she had me interested until the whole ‘Evil plotting my destruction’ scenario. That was a common thing with the Channel. I don’t know, maybe she was made crazy by all the ‘channeling’? But she was always on this kick—or those she channeled was—that we were evil in our past lives (except for her) and this life was our punishment– and Evil from all our past lives was out to make us suffer, and blah, blah, blah.

This was an all day, everyday- thing anymore. And to be honest, I didn’t believe that ;’Evil’ had that kind of power. I am a firm believer that no one can do anything to you unless you allow it. Not like that anyway.

So, looking at my friend, rolling my eyes, I bid my good-nights and hid out to drive home. I live 25 minutes away in a more rural area than these people do. It’s after 3 am when I near my house, having to turn onto the road that leads me to it.

It’s a crossroad and I need to go left in order to drive 10 more minutes to get home. I turn left, its the dead of night, no cars, no traffic and certainly no people. No sooner did my wheels turn, I slammed on my breaks.

There is in plain sight, lying in the road, a HUGE black dog. Abnormally big, in fact. I mean the only way I can go past it, is to drive over it.

My eyes were wide open, my mouth probably dropped. Now being me, always trying to dissect any situation, I start looking around. There is a large street light plus my high beams. The reason for the light was because a trailer sat way back off the road and because the wife worked the late shift, the husband installed a light at the end of their driveway for her.

But they didn’t have a black dog. In fact, I didn’t know anyone in this area that had a dog this big.

Was the dog hit?

I didn’t see any blood. I even honked my horn thinking maybe the dang thing was asleep, although I have never seen a dog sleep in the middle of a normally busy road before. And the only reason this road wasn’t busy is because its so late.

I start thinking about the spirit. And yes, I even started to test my fate by getting out of the car to see if the animal ripped my throat out lol. But then reality hit me. What if some bad people were hiding in the fields or a ditch? What if they put the dog there hoping some woman got out of  her car so they could rob her, slit her throat,  and what if….

Hey, while I didn’t live in a crime inflicted area, ya never know.

So driving real slow up to the dog, I keep trying to get ‘it’ to move but nothing. I even turn my car different directions so that my high beams are blaring into the fields…that way if some bad person was hiding….

But nothing.

Deciding it was too dark and too weird (especially since this crying daughter of mine had warned me) I drive around the dog—literally having to drive onto the edge of the road, into the field a little, and hid home.

But I didn’t get very far before curiosity nailed me again. I didn’t get but around the corner before I turned around and went back. Now, if I were where the dog was, he could have seen my bumper—that’s how short of a distance I went. But when I turned around, the dog… was GONE.

I did the same thing I did before. I spun my car around in all directions trying to see if the black canine was running through the fields, but there was nothing. And mind you, this thing was so big that I would have seen it.

But like I said, NOTHING.

I never knew what the hell it meant. And sometimes I am mad that I didn’t risk my throat, get out, and see for myself.

Then a few years ago, I was researching some Pagan lore and stumbled upon Hekate. I read where she was known to frequent crossroads and that often, black dogs appeared out of nowhere or were seen by her.

Now while I doubt Hekate came to rip my throat out…I wondered if this had something to do with it? What was she trying to tell me? What did the entire situation mean? I guess I will never know but that doesn’t mean I’ll ever forget it.

Are the Dead Truly Dead?

Egyptians gave as much attention to their dead as they did to the living. Some believe that the Book of the Dead is a morbid book of death but that simply isn’t so. Normally people flock the shelves and pull off one book translated by Budge, however, if you want to explore a more beautiful side to death, a more spiritual, then I’d suggest Normandi Ellis’ book called Awakening Osiris –A translation of the Book of the Dead. After reading that book, and believe me, I’ve read it many, many, many times, I began to wonder if there was something concerning the Egyptians, their mummies, and their outlook on death that we were missing.

Ancient Egyptians did not view their death with fear or hesitation. Death was but a doorway into a new existence…a new life…a new world. They spent their entire life preparing for this journey but also making the best of their life despite their place in society. For instance, a cook used his or hers talents to the best of their abilities because they believed that it was a gift from the Gods. A carpenter was the same way or anyone of any skill or trade.

Pharaohs spent entire lifetimes building huge pyramids and no matter who you were, when you died, those who loved you did not mourn with despair but rather made a ritual of bringing temple cakes and incense to your tomb each and every day where they would leave them for you.

That which can be named must exist. That which is named can be written. That which is written shall be remembered. That which is remembered lives. In the land of Egypt Osiris breathes. The sun rises and mists disperse. As I am, I was, and I shall be a thing of matter and heaven.—Normandi Ellis Awakening Osiris

Egyptians believed that as long as they remembered a person’s name, they would live forever. You can imagine their horror when Christianity and other forms of religions swept through, stabbing the stones of temples in a cruel attempt to rid the world of various Gods/Goddesses and then turning those places of Ancient stone into churches of their own.

Some people don’t realize this but the rituals for preparing the dead in The Book of the Dead were some of the longest lasting funeral preparations surviving culture after culture. They even saw their way into Rome and the only thing that prevented the rituals from going further is that each culture added their own mark, making them longer and longer. Also, eventually, Rome fell under the hands of a One God path so the old ways were long gone.

Here is the question though…

Did the Egyptians have knowledge of other worlds? They claimed that when a person died, they passed through the stages of the Underworld…a place that was a dimension all on its own. It was believed that the person would take their place by the Gods. Some believe that they passed through to another world while others believed the ‘other side’ was simply a reward, an experience spent until the time of reincarnation came.

If this is correct…are the Dead really dead? Perhaps the Spirits that we see are glimpses we catch when the veil is thin. Perhaps these are not spirits or souls lingering about, but actual beings living in another time, another place. And perhaps when the Egyptians believed that death was but a door into another phase of life…another world…they meant more by that then what we first imagined.

It’s something to think about.

Osiris returns from the mountain of sand to the green land of his birth. Morning comes to Egypt. Across an expanse of dirt and stone, cool shadows strain towards the mountain where in dry tombs the dead are yawning, wondering who has lit the temple fire and who has brought sweet cake. I, Osiris, rise and hurry into the two lands of the living. Black earth and red earth join a buckle of sky. I embrace the double horizon. I embrace the two mountains, the east and the west. I am god of the living and dead, embracing my soul and shadow. –Normandi Ellis Awakening Osiris

Ghosts and Spirits!

 ATT1421212020

These two constantly get confused. In fact before I did research on it, I was one of millions who thought that they were the same. But , turns out , they’re not.

Spirits

Spirits are not out to scare anyone. In fact if they do scare you, it is said that they feel really bad about doing it. There’s usually no ‘threatening feeling’ sensed when you see one. In fact, after seeing one, you’ll probably end up finding excuses for it– like tossing it up to imagination. Its truly that subtle.

Spirits have crossed over. They know their place is on the other side or other dimension, or afterlife or whatever term you personally use for it. When they come to our side, they’re just passing through.

Usually they come with a message or to help someone or something out.

Remember, a spirit is not out to harm you or scare you in anyway. If you have the gift of sensing them, then surely you know that when you do, there are no feelings of dread or trouble. If you are new at your gift and are spooked a bit at first, then pay close attention– as it will pass. They have a surreal calm about them and once you get used to things, you learn to recognize that.

There is NO reason to help spirits cross over and into the light. They are not like ghosts, they know their place and are just traveling around. They come and go as they please, without causing harm.

Ghosts

Ghosts, according to some, are the tricksters out to scare us. Why do they go out of their way to do this? Some people say its because the living love to be scared. They pay tons of money for horror movies just to catch the thrill of fright. They go to carnivals or haunted houses, looking for the thrill.

So ghosts are out to do just that, scare you. Its kind of like when you were a kid and you would hide from another kid. When the other kid least expected it, you jumped out and yelled BOO! Then scared the poor kid silly and in doing so, you got yourself a major laugh.

Ghosts are probably having one good laugh right after the other.

I have personally made jokes that when I die I was going to muck with so and so, so hard….lol. So maybe Ghosts are just passing time at your expense.

That’s one theory.

According to this same theory, though, people soon become comfortable with their Ghosts. They’re no longer frightened or scared. They give them names. Make them  the resident spook or pet—kind of.

This is when people begin to confuse them with Spirits. Once a Ghost becomes bored, which is likely if they can’t scare you, they move on.

However, sometimes they become worse. Raising the stakes so to speak until they can get another rise out of you. Hey, its what I’d do lol.

Some say the problem with Ghosts is, they do not have a place that they fit in. They refuse to recognize the fact that they’re dead. They simply do not see that they are no longer of our world and of  the world of the dead around them. They are sometimes completely ignorant to the fact that they’re dead altogether or that there are are dead passing back and forth.

This reminded me of something. Ever see the movie The Others? Perfect example of a Ghost. The mother and her children had absolutely no clue that they were dead. They still saw themselves as part of the living world. So they sought to hang out with the living.

Ghosts can be perceived by the living in a number of ways: through sight (apparitions), sound (voices), smell {fragrances, odors,} touch, and sometimes they can just be sensed.
