Ancient Calendar & Pagan Holidays: January 4

Today or around this day in Medieval Europe is known as Mummers! Now, if you are a fan of Loreena McKennit like I am, then you may recognize the term Mummer from her song the Mummer’s Dance. (I included a video below as a treat today!)

But what was this day of Mummer’s all about? Well as you will see in the video, it was a huge celebration that involved elaborate costumes and masks, dancing throughout the streets, story telling, grand plays—and it was all usually done by it’s performers in silence.

The plays and stories normally revolved around the battle between good and evil, always mixing it up with loads of magic.
