Magickal Baths

I received these years ago in email, saved them, and now have a use for them I suppose. If you’re into this type of thing, enjoy!

Full Moon Bath

Fill the tub half-full of water (not too hot). Dip a quart of this
water in a glass bowl. Hold this bowl outside for a few moments; let
the moon’s light shine on the water.

Then return inside and add the water back into the bath. Add one half-
cup of milk and a bit of lemon peel to the water. Light a white
candle. Burn jasmine incense; alternatively, burn lotus, gardenia or
sandalwood incense.

Bathe, feeling the moon’s power flowing through you; nurturing you;
comforting you. Close your eyes and visualize the moon directly above
you.

When finished, dry off and go about regular activities. Realize that
you have attuned yourself to the moon and have become strengthened.

To relax and become attuned to the Goddess at the end of your busy day,
treat yourself to a Moon soak. To start, prepare a small dish of white flower
petals mixed lightly with epsom salts and scented with a few drops of jasmine
oil. Have ready a silver or light blue candle and draw a warm bath. Light your
candle and turn off all other lights, adding some soft background music if
you so choose. Disrobe and look out a window, if possible, to see the Moon. If
you can’t see Her, visualize Her in whatever phase she is in. Ask the Lady of
the Moon to bless you, and draw down her power, as you anoint your forehead, head, throat, heart, abdomen, loins, and feet, each with a drop of jasmine
oil. Now toss your epsom salt mixture into the bath, step in, and enjoy.

The Origins of the Apple and a bit about Eden

You maybe wondering, why an article about Adam and Eve or the origins of the Apple? What does this have to do with Women, Healing & Lore?

It has everything to do with it. Not only do I want to throw light on the Mountain Women who helped shape the New World, but I also wanted to show a historical account of how Religion has, well, tried to destroy a Gender.

We all know the story of Adam and Eve. Eve was tempted by the serpent to eat the forbidden fruit that God told her not to touch. After doing so, she tempted Adam and led him away from God’s love. This resulted in, let’s say, the rose-colored glasses being ripped off their eyes– WOMAN damned us all– and got us cast out of the Garden of Eden.

Unfortunately, this version began with Christianity….the jaded untruth of it.

Eve’s fruit of knowledge used to be the Goddess’s sacred heart of immortality all over Indo-European civilizations.  Many of the Goddess’s western paradises had the Apple right in it, growing by the many.
The Garden of Eden was thought to be the same as Avalon known by the Celts. “Apple Land” was a country ruled by Morgan, the Queen of the dead. Back in days of old, kings would receive the Goddess’s apples holding within its fruit, the gift of Immortality. Then, they would go to live with her in Avalon, just as King Arthur was taken to live with her…delivered to her by three fairy queens representing the triple Goddess.
Scandinavians would put tons of apples by the graves because they believed them to be essential for resurrection.  In the west, the Norse Goddess Idun kept under her care the apple Land of the west, where the Gods would go to receive the fruit in which kept them deathless.
Apples were also believed to carry souls from one body to the next. In certain festivities such as Yule, an apple was roasted in the mouth of a pig to serve as a heart in the next life.
Greeks claimed that Hera kept the apple Garden in the west where the sacred tree of life was guarded by her sacred serpent.  Now think about that…and think about the story of Eve. It isn’t quite as negative when pondering its origins eh?

Graves points out that this is where the story of Adam, Eve, and the serpent originated from in a very horribly misinterpreted way. In fact he points out that it was deliberately done so. Icons show the Great Goddess offering life to her worshipper, in the form of an apple with the tree and its serpent in the background.

Romans named their apple mother Pomona which was probably gotten from the Estruscaris.

Now here’s a bit of fact for ya…

Cut an apple transversely, as the gypsies and the witches of days of old were known to do. Hidden in the apples core is the magic pentacle or sign of Kore (Core). Just as Kore the virgin was hidden in the heart of the mother earth (Demeter) and represented the World Soul, so her pentacle  was hidden in the apple.

The pentacle in a circle was also the Egyptian Hieroglyph for the underworld womb where resurrection was brought  about by the mother-heart of transformations.

In Celtic Paganism , the apple meant a sacred marriage and journey to the land of death.

The poisoned apple was created by Christian men in regards to Hel or Hecate who was viewed as Virgin and Mother. In competition with the Goddess/apple lore, Christian men told people that a witch would cause demonic possession through her gift of an apple unto her victim. (insert Snow White here?) Old women were actually slain if caught giving an apple to a child or adult. Suddenly when this happened the people who took the apple and ate it became troubled with fits.

The story of Adam and Eve…Eve being tempted by the serpent to take the apple was nothing more than a plight to steer fear towards the Goddess and her knowledge and immortality. The serpent became something viewed as evil as one bite from an apple, damned all women and all of the world.

It became the cause of women’s suffering and pain– claiming she deserved it because of what Eve did. What it was, in truth, was one of the very first steps taken in discrediting women and their knowledge of things. Knowledge of healing and of the Great Mother Earth.

MEDICINAL: Apples are used to treat constipation. The pectin in fresh apples can help to lower cholesterol levels, an aid in treating heart disease. Crushed apple leaves can be rubbed on a fresh wound to prevent infection.

MAGICKAL: Apple blossoms are used in love and healing incenses. An apple should be given to a lover as a present – you should eat one half, the lover the other. It is given as an offering on Samhain to the dead, since it is a symbol of immortality. Apple wood is used to make magickal wands. Pouring apple cider on the ground in your garden before you plant gives the earth life.

GROWING: Apple trees grow over most of North America. They need a cool winter period, making them unsuitable for low desert or tropical regions. Check with your local nursery for varieties best suited to your area and growing conditions.

Hot Topics: Jesus was a Witch!

Another hot topic brewing between Pagans and non- Pagans are our lovely Christian Witches. This seems to either piss off or appall many –for that, I am slightly confused. But then again, I can see where both sides are coming from. So, let’s take a look at that now.

Some Pagans have found a comfortable balance between Christianity and Paganism. They have taken what seems and feels right of one faith and blended it with another. Those that I have spoken to, seem to hold onto Jesus, and his teachings, but disregard God particularly the one in the Old Testament. Basically, these people hold onto the love of Christianity while merging it with a Nature path, one that includes the Goddess and a more kinder God.

Those who are against–

Well the majority of Christians really get ticked off about this and to be honest, most Pagans are rather floored as well. When one becomes a Pagan, they usually see the nonsense in Christianity for various reasons…and I think its common sense as to why Christians are annoyed.

But should they be?

How many times have we heard that the bible, the entire backbone of Christianity, was simply ripped off from ancient Pagan religions? How many times have we read, studied, and found that truth out for ourselves?

How many ancient orders actually had their own version of Paganism and Christianity—creating a perfect blend—long before Constantine sold the soul of Rome? Of course in some of those societies, Mary Mag was a Priestess, Jesus a Priest, and or sometimes they both represented the Goddess and God. Either way, mixing Paganism and Christianity is not so far fetched.

And to those who do, Jesus is, well, a witch. It makes perfect sense in the minds of those who believe it. And when broken down and explored, is really no more far fetched than Christians believing he is the Son of a God, and a mortal woman, conceived without the act of sex itself—see, magic, sorcery, and probably a little of the Nephilim or Grigori going on there, I think.  lol

We have to remember that the beauty of Paganism is that we can create our own path and center ourselves around the things that bring us joy and peace. And while some things may seem shocking at first, if we do what Pagans do…explore and enlighten ourselves on further knowledge, educate ourselves, then that which has shocked us, is not so shocking after all.

And we need to remember that as Pagans, we are thought to be as shocking as well….so we really don’t need to bring that to our own circle…two wrongs never really making a right. I mean if we can’t practice religious tolerance then aren’t we no better than the dominant religions we strayed from…sought to avoid…found absolutely no reasoning with? Something to think about.

Striving for Balance–Dark & Light– An Interview

First, I would like to thank Anjelin for doing this interview. I recently caught her reply to a discussion in a Pagan group speaking about Dark Paganism. I have met people who used this term before, and have used it myself, so the confusion caused by her confession was of no surprise to me. The word Dark seems to throw many for a loop, which is why I asked Anjelin to do an interview with us. Maybe at the end of it, we can sweep away some of the fearful and very misunderstood stereotypes stapled to her belief.

Now Anjelin was once a member of the Church of Satan but she has started a new path, an extension from, called The Order of Shadows.

C.H. Scarlett: What exactly is the Order of Shadows?

Anjelin : In Albany NY there is a church called the Correllian Nativist Church, run by HP Davron. He believes in balance of both the light and dark and had formed Order of Shadows, as a darker path and organization. He let it sit for awhile, not getting it going until recently. Lillee and John Allee are in charge of this organization and have asked some of us that they know to be on the counsel in getting it up and running. The Order of Shadows is for dark pagans and Satanists, but open to anyone who wants to learn. We just finished our seekers class which was on learning to have balance in our lives and that both the right hand path and left hand path are needed to find balance. This is also learning about our shadow selves, sometimes maybe not liking all we find out about ourselves, but learning to embrace and maybe change what we don’t like. It’s looking deep into ourselves. The book used in the seekers class, was Right and Left of Center by John and Lillee Allee. It’s about finding balance in our lives, both magical and mundane. It’s how we sometimes veer farther one-way at some times and veer the opposite direction at others. While trying to maintain at the middle pillar.

C.H. Scarlett: Yeah I believe in balance to. However, we all perceive or define Dark differently. Most people, even Pagans consider the dark to mean Evil. I never quite got that, since I am eclectic, however, to each their own. We also have many Light Workers, Love and Lighters, New Agers and so forth that connect the word Dark with Evil. When you tell someone you are a Dark Pagan, just what are the reactions? When you mention Satanism, I am sure that gets quite a reaction as well.

Anjelin: Mentioning Dark Pagan and Satanist has always brought scared looks from Pagans. Over time in my area, I have been able to teach those who are RHP (Right Hand Path), what it really means. I think it means something a bit different to everyone. When we talk about shadow, I consider it moving back and forth between right and left. Another meaning it has (which could be why those who are light workers fear this) is that it is parts of ourselves that are hidden. Things about ourselves we haven’t faced and may not even like. As someone who is darker, I am able to embrace all aspects of myself and accept them. Also, practicing a darker path is admitting that there are things that we may sometimes have to do that isn’t all love. And that’s ok. There will be a need to protect yourself or those that you love at some point. I had someone (still do at times) that sends servitors to my house to watch me and used to do magic to stop me from having relationships. Someone told me to visualize him in a pink bubble and blow him away. Now in all reality, would that work on someone who is not only magically powerful, but also evil and mean as well? Things much stronger were needed. For me dark is practicing magic however, it is needed and using my conscience to determine what is right to do at the time. Every situation is different. It is also embracing and accepting all aspects of who I am.

C.H. Scarlett: It’s very interesting that you speak about the Shadow and that it is the part of us, which is hidden. In Greece, there were two different views concerning Daimon and Daemon. A Daimon was perceived to be a messenger of the Gods (the definition varies of course) but Daemon, according to some Greek Scholars, was the Shadow of ourselves. It was the part of ourselves that we denied, or ignored, or kept hidden, and sometimes it was believed to be the darker part of ourselves, often the part that we suppress. So in all actuality you really aren’t touching base on anything new, just something forgotten and tossed aside throughout time. You, seem to be doing what all other Pagans strive to do, touch base with your roots as ancient and far back as you can get them. Does that seem accurate?

Anjelin: Its very accurate. In order to find balance in our lives, we have to embrace all aspects of ourselves and that includes some of the things we may not like. But, I have also found that there are parts of me that were in the shadow that are actually not a bad thing once they are understood.

I think one thing that needs to be said, is that we all strive for balance and the only thing that holds us back is fear. Whether someone is Right Hand Path or Left Hand Path we know what needs to be done and what should not be done. What I mean by this is that RHP-ers follow the rede or something similar (Christians are also considered RHP and they have the golden rule, etc…) and LHP-ers (Left Hand Path) do not. In the end no matter what our path is, we know right from wrong. As a LHP-er, my conscience will tell me whether I should do something or not. As an example: If I am planning a spell and have doubts or feel it’s not really something I should be doing, I will know that I shouldn’t. I know without anyone telling me, it’s the wrong thing to be doing. I don’t need a rede or any written word to tell me so.  You will feel it and know it. None of us should be afraid to do what is best for us or our loved one, RHP or LHP.
